Wilfred Burgess was born in Kensal Rise, London in 1891 (Hendon Q1-1891 3A:191), son of Alfred and Hannah BURGESS (née NIGHTINGALE).
1901 census...Aged 10, he was at School House, Burrough Green with his father Alfred BURGESS [43] teacher born St Leonards on Sea, Sussex and his mother Hannah [50] born Briery Hill, Staffs. 1911 census...Aged 20, a science student, he was at School House, Burrough Green with his parents. He was organist at St. Augustine's Church, Burrough Green from 1906 to 1912. |

His CWGC entry has him in the 4th battalion, but that battalion never served in the BEF, being in India 1914-1915 and then Mesopotamia for the rest
of the war. The 6th Battalion Somerset Light Infantry went into action on 22nd August 1917 as part of the 14th Division and attacked astride the Menin Road in the direction of Inverness Copse. The 6th came into the line on 17th August with the 6th taking over the right sub sector and the 6th Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry the left. At this time the front line crossed the Menin Road in a north - south direction about half way between Clapham Junction and the western edge of Inverness Copse.The line to be captured in the assault that was to commence on the 22nd ran from Herenthage Chateau to the southern edge of Glencorse wood. The 6th Somerset Light Infantry had 64 killed on 22nd August 1917, of which only 10 have identified graves |
